july 2002
The new Coinmonster CD, "Tilton Johnson" was released nationally on July 16. Pre-sales for this disc were extraordinary and in fact made Coinmonster the first Bandaloop Records recording artist to recoup PRIOR to their release date. Extra special thanks to everyone who pre-ordered and thanks to everyone who has bought the CD so far. There is some serious major label interest in this release so if you haven't already bought it, please do! Every sale counts to the majors. It's all about Soundscan. The record should be in all stores regionally. If you can't find it, please email me and let us know which store(s) don't have it and we'll work on getting them in there. Also, please tell the store manager that you couldn't find what you were looking for. This goes for all Bandaloop Records titles.
The Bandaloop Records compilation "It Takes a Village: Volume 1: Heavy", is now available on-line . This is a great collection of some of the best heavy bands in the region, including: Coinmonster (New Castle, PA), Project 9 (Akron, OH), The Booginz (New Castle, PA), Tadpol (Cleveland, OH), Via Sahara (Youngstown, OH), Ritual Space Travel Agency (Pittsburgh, PA), No Blindfold (Cleveland, OH), Loopus (Rochester, NY), Dysrhythmia (Philadelphia, PA), Hate Dies Hard (Kent, OH), Skudd (Erie, PA), Tilt 360 (Youngstown, OH). CD release parties are currently being scheduled throughout the region, mainly for September.
Two tracks from the new Ritual Space Travel Agency CD, "Ratbelly vs Gorgotron" will be featured in the August edition of AFTV (Abercrombie & Fitch TV). This edition is about an up and coming boxer and the songs "Fractured" and "Death to the Blood Stained Giant" will be featured. The episode will be played in A&F retail stores nationwide and will also be available for viewing on their website .
Samplers! We have samplers! Despite Ben's (The Booginz) near arrest at Ozzfest/Pittsburgh, we still have samplers available. These are free CD's that include 2 songs by each of the Bandaloop Records recording artists. Poor Ben was picked up for "soliciting" in the parking lot at the Ozzfest. After phone calls to legal counsel and an hour or so of drama and assurance that he was neither a prostitute nor a drug dealer, Ben was released without incident. Several hours later, all contraband (the free sampler CDs) were released without further incident. Hats off to the stellar security team at the Post-Gazette Pavillion. While supplies last, a free sampler will be included with every on-line order .
The Booginz are happy to announce that Justin Page has been selected as their new drummer. He will make his Booginz debut at Vexfest on Sunday, August 11.
Yellow No. 5 and Go Robot, Go! are in the studio wrapping up full length releases. Hoping for fall releases on both titles.
Bandaloop Records t-shirts are sold out. New shirts with the new logo are now available (picture forthcoming).
Coinmonster
Tilton Johnson reviews:
Pittsburgh
Pulp.com
Freetimes
Pittsburgh City Paper:
New Castle natives Coinmonster hold a very unenviable music-world position.
The band's music is, on the surface, of a very identifiable type: Power-trio
rock utilizing technique heavy guitar, bass and drums in complex stop-start
rhythms. There's a bit of Primus, a smidgeon of Rush, a touch of Jaco in the
band's music, and that puts Coinmonster in a certain slot pretty easily. But
while Coinmonster would never shy away from its progressive-heavy-music mantle,
it's the band's songwriting style and musical broad-mindedness that makes
Tilton Johnson, its sixth full length album, stand out from
the pack. Tilton Johnson has elements of other bass-legend favorites--like
a fiercer fIREHOSE or Mike Watt -- as well as distinctive songwriting that
isn't afraid to go beyond major-minor chord progressions. (Hell, "There Should
Be a Test" could be a heavy-power trio XTC). Coinmonster's not afraid to play
around a bit either:"Gag Reflex" is a mighty fine banjo-based country stomp,
and "Anywhere on the Earth" ends Tilton Johnson on a decidely
space-rock instrumental note. Arguably, Coinmonster's biggest draw is that
it seems to put more effort into everything than the average trio. Just like
the bass (Rick Stoner), drums (David Galazia), and guitars (Jon Reider) take
that extra step instrumentally, and the band as a whole adds instruments and
effects to create layered songs deeper than the sum of its parts, Coinmonster's
lyrics go beyond the testosterone-and-termination themes of heavy rock. That
extra effort pays off -- maybe not in fame or cash, but in an album illustrative
of the band's worth. -- Justin Hopper
Brother Eye's All the Pretty Girls Get the Triangle review: Indie-music.com
The Booginz' Aftermath of I-79 review: Indie-music.com: I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t consider myself a connoisseur of heavy metal, or even challenging hard rock music. Of course, growing up, I had a stint where I was exposed to quite a bit of it, at least enough to learn the difference before writing off bands I didn’t like. Through some of this exposure I had a revelation of the musical variety - I listened to Faith No More in the basement of a friend of mine, who, over the years, never ceased to amaze me with his ability to find interesting new material to freak out all his suburban friends. I believe my first reaction might have been simply sitting cockeyed, staring at the speakers with my mouth slightly ajar. As far as Faith No More was concerned, I was hooked. But that experience taught me to give every kind of music a good hard listen, and an open chance, before deciding whether or not I liked it. So what was my first reaction to The Booginz? Probably something similar to the mouth ajar, heavy listening experience with FNM. The Faith No More influences and similarities are inevitable (and consider yourselves LUCKY if you get a favorable comparison), as well as some nods of the head to Mr. Bungle. The performance here is really quite developed, and caused another moment of surprise for me to learn this was The Booginz’ debut album. The material itself is pure madness, defying categories except to lump in with hard rock. There are a multitude of melodic and rhythmic changeups, in addition to some serious vocal shredding by George Stevens. Stevens’ vocals are definitely a focal point here, because his captivating presence allows this record to push well past good into the “great” category. What’s most surprising and most notable about this record is the energetic delivery that gives liftoff to material that takes risks and seems to truly showcase this band’s talent. The sound and songs may not be that familiar, but there is definite mainstream appeal here. The Booginz just seem to have that intangible “it” factor that bleeds easily across genres. Taking a listen to this record could just redeem the homogenized and often spiritless hard rock arena that kids are buying into these days. There are a lot of hard rock bands, but not very many good ones. And The Booginz just happen to put a lot of them to shame. Standout tracks: “Hermaphrodite”, “Chineka”, “Silly”, “Fortress”, “In Perpetude” - Heidi Drockelman, Indie-music.com
